Today was the annual RED day with Keller Williams in Knoxville. More than 70 agents from the two Knox County area locations in Bearden and Farragut. We volunteered to do clean-up at the National Veteran’s Cemetery, near Northshore Park.
The cemetery is the final resting place for several thousand veterans and their wives. The experience was both fun, in the camaraderie of manual labor with so many friends, and sobering – veterans of World War II layed side-by-side with others who served in the Persian Gulf.
I personally dedicated my labor in honor of my father, Albert Howard, who turned 21 in the rice paddies of Vietnam and 60 in the desert of Iraq. He still serves today, not as a soldier, but as a community volunteer – regularly delivering meals, made by my mother, to a few area shut-ins as well as helping widows in their small town with maintenance of their homes and carrying their trash to the local dump every Saturday morning.
The clean-up event was punctuated by an actual funeral, a fitting reminder of the importance of remembering the monumental contributions of those men and women who serve – whether they layed down their lives or donated a period of their lives to the defense of Republic.
